Ores
Introduction
An ore is a naturally occurring mineral from which a metal can be profitably extracted.
Not all minerals are ores, but all ores are minerals.
In Bihar, ores like bauxite, pyrite, and mica play a role in mining economy and industry.
What is an Ore?
- A mineral that contains a valuable metal in concentrated form
- Must be economically viable for extraction
- Undergoes crushing β concentration β extraction β purification
- Ore β Metal: Ores are chemical compounds (often oxides, sulphides, carbonates)
π PYQ (BPSC): What is an ore? β Mineral from which metal is profitably extracted
π Expected MCQ: Ore contains? β Metal in concentrated form
Common Ores and Their Metals
| Metal | Important Ore(s) | Chemical Formula |
|---|---|---|
| Iron | Hematite, Magnetite | FeβOβ, FeβOβ |
| Aluminium | Bauxite | AlβOβΒ·xHβO |
| Copper | Copper pyrite | CuFeSβ |
| Zinc | Zinc blende, Calamine | ZnS, ZnCOβ |
| Lead | Galena | PbS |
| Manganese | Pyrolusite | MnOβ |
| Mercury | Cinnabar | HgS |
| Tin | Cassiterite | SnOβ |
| Silver | Argentite | AgβS |
| Gold | Native form (no ore) | Au (elemental) |
π Expected MCQ: Ore of aluminium is? β Bauxite
π Expected MCQ: Galena is ore of? β Lead
Ores in Bihar β State-Specific Applications
ποΈ Natural Resources
- Bauxite (Aluminium ore) found in Rohtas and Munger
- Pyrite (source of Sulphur) found in Amjhore, Rohtas
- Mica deposits in Nawada, Gaya, and southern Bihar
- Small reserves of iron ore in districts near Jharkhand border
π Industrial Use
- Bauxite from Bihar sent to aluminium plants in Jharkhand
- Mica extracted for use in electrical insulation, cosmetics, paints
- Pyrite used in fertilizer and sulphuric acid industries
π Economy & Policy
- Bihar Mines and Geology Department regulates ore exploration
- Bihar promotes mineral-based MSMEs (tiles, wires, ornaments)
- Ores also used in stone crushing, cement, and railway material units
π Expected MCQ: Bauxite is found in which Bihar district? β Rohtas
π Expected MCQ: Which mineral from Bihar is used in paints and cosmetics? β Mica
Ore Extraction Processes
- Concentration: Removal of impurities
- Calcination: Heating in absence of air (for carbonates)
- Roasting: Heating in presence of air (for sulphides)
- Reduction: Metal extracted using heat or chemical agents
π Expected MCQ: Which process is used for sulphide ore? β Roasting
π Expected MCQ: Ore of copper is? β Copper pyrite
Important Concepts
βοΈ Mineral
Naturally occurring inorganic substance with definite chemical composition.
