1D Learning Theories: Part-2

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory

  • Abraham Maslow proposed this theory in 1943. He stated that human needs are arranged in a hierarchy (pyramid form) and a person fulfills the lower-level needs first before moving towards higher-level needs.

  • Levels of Needs

    1. Physiological Needs
      • Basic survival needs → food, water, sleep, air, shelter.
      • Example: A hungry person thinks first about food.
    2. Safety Needs
      • Need for physical and financial security → home, job, health, stability.
      • Example: A person looks for a safe house and a stable job.
    3. Love and Belongingness Needs
      • Need for relationships, affection, friendship, family.
      • Example: A person seeks friendship or family bonding.
    4. Esteem Needs
      • Need for respect, recognition, achievement, confidence.
      • Example: A student wants recognition for performing well in exams.
    5. Self-Actualization Needs
      • Fulfilling one’s potential, creativity, personal growth, self-satisfaction.
      • Example: An artist striving to achieve excellence in art.
    6. Self-Transcendence Needs
      • This level is above Self-Actualization.
      • A person moves beyond self-interest to seek altruism, spirituality, and a higher purpose.
      • Example: People like Mahatma Gandhi or Mother Teresa who devoted their lives to others.
  • Importance

    • Helps in understanding and fulfilling students’ different needs in education.
    • Useful in motivation and personality development.
    • Practical applications in management, counseling, and classroom teaching.
  • Key Features

    1. Hierarchy of Needs
      • Human needs are arranged from lower to higher levels in a pyramid form.
    2. Lower Needs First
      • A person fulfills basic needs (food, water, safety) first, then moves to higher needs (esteem, self-actualization).
    3. One Level Dominates at a Time
      • At a time, one level of need dominates, and after its fulfillment, the next level becomes important.
    4. Universal Order
      • All individuals generally follow the same order (physiological → transcendence).
    5. No Jumping Without Fulfillment
      • Higher needs cannot be pursued unless lower needs are satisfied.
    6. Highest Needs
      • At the highest level, a person realizes their potential (self-actualization) and works for others’ welfare (self-transcendence).

Kurt Lewin’s Change Management Model

  • Kurt Lewin proposed this model to explain change in organizations and behavior. He stated that change occurs in three stages:

    1. Unfreeze
    2. Change/Transition
    3. Refreeze
    1. Unfreeze
    • Breaking old beliefs, behaviors, and mindset.
    • Making people realize why change is needed.
    • Example: Convincing teachers to adopt new technology instead of old teaching methods.
    1. Change / Transition
    • Actual implementation of new ideas, processes, or behaviors.
    • Example: Introducing smart classes and digital learning in a school.
    1. Refreeze
    • Making the change permanent and stable.
    • Ensuring people don’t return to old ways.
    • Example: Making smart classes a part of the regular timetable and training teachers properly.
  • Key Features

    1. Simple and practical model.
    2. Applicable to both organizational and personal changes.
    3. Helps overcome resistance to change.
    4. Widely used in education, management, and counseling.

Bloom’s Taxonomy (Original, 1956)

  • It was first introduced in 1956 by Benjamin Bloom and his team.

  • Its aim was to classify educational objectives so that teachers could better plan lessons, assessments, and curriculum.

  • Bloom divided learning into 3 Domains:

    1. Cognitive (Knowledge, Thinking, Problem Solving)
    2. Affective (Feelings, Attitudes, Values)
    3. Psychomotor (Physical skills, Motor abilities)
  • Cognitive Domain

    1. Knowledge
      • Facts, information and data to remember.
      • It has memory and recall ability.
      • Example: Student recalls a formula or dates of history.
    2. Comprehension
      • Not just memorizing knowledge but understanding its meaning.
      • Explaining, describing a concept.
      • Example: Student explains the meaning of a scientific principle.
    3. Application
      • Using learned knowledge in practical situations.
      • Applying knowledge in problem solving.
      • Example: Student applies grammar rules while writing sentences while writing.
    4. Analysis
      • Breaking information into parts to understand relationships and patterns.
      • Identifying hidden meanings and structure.
      • Example: Student analyzes causes of World War II.
    5. Synthesis
      • Combining different parts to create something new.
      • Creative combination and design.
      • Example: Student designs a science project by combining different ideas.
    6. Evaluation
      • Making decisions and checking something.
      • Value judgment based on criteria.
      • Example: Student evaluates whether an argument is strong or weak.

Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy (2001)

  • In 2001, Anderson and Krathwohl revised this taxonomy.

  • The purpose of this revision was to make learning objectives more modern, action-oriented and student-centered.

  • Major Changes

    1. Changed from Noun form (Knowledge, Comprehension…) to Verb form (Remember, Understand…).
    2. Position of the two top levels changed.
      1. In 1956 top level was→ Evaluation
      2. In 2001 top level became→ Creating
    3. Removed the word “Synthesis” and replaced it with “Creating”.
  • Cognitive Domain

    1. Remembering
      • Basic level → facts, definitions, formulas recall.
      • Rote learning.
      • Example: Student recalls periodic table symbols.
    2. Understanding
      • Extracting meaning from information and interpret.
      • Summarize, explain, translate.
      • Example: Student explains concept of democracy.
    3. Applying
      • Using knowledge in practical tasks.
      • Example: Student uses a rule of grammar in writing.
    4. Analyzing
      • Break information into parts to find patterns and relationships.
      • Example: Student analyzes factors behind climate change.
    5. Evaluating
      • Checking ideas and solutions.
      • Criticism, justification, decision making.
      • Example: Student judges validity of an experiment.
    6. Creating
      • Highest level → develop new design, model or idea.
      • Originality and innovation.
      • Example: Student creates a new computer program.

Affective Domain

  • This domain deals with emotions, attitudes, interests, and values.

  • It measures how students feel, respond, and internalize values.

    1. Receiving
      • Awareness and willingness to listen.
      • Example: Student pays attention in class.
    2. Responding
      • Active participation and response.
      • Example: Student answers teacher’s question.
    3. Valuing
      • Giving importance to a concept or idea.
      • Example: Student respects honesty or discipline.
    4. Organization
      • Organize different values to create own value system.
      • Example: Student develops philosophy of life (truth, justice, equality).
    5. Characterization
      • Making values a permanent part of personality.
      • Example: Gandhi’s life-long commitment to non-violence.

Psychomotor Domain

  • This domain deals with skills, body movements, coordination and motor activities.

  • Like– handwriting, drawing, dancing, playing sports, lab experiments etc.

  • Imitation

    • Copy by observing.
    • Example: Student imitates teacher’s experiment.
  • Manipulation

    • Perform activity based on instructions.
    • Example: Student performs lab task with guidance.
  • Precision

    • Doing skill with accuracy and exactness.
    • Example: Typing with few errors.
  • Articulation

    • Coordinate different skills.
    • Example: Playing piano with both hands in rhythm.
  • Naturalization

    • Practice skills so much that they become natural.
    • Example: Professional dancer or athlete performing smoothly.
