Prithviraj Chauhan

Prithviraj Chauhan (c. 1166โ€“1192 CE) was the last major Rajput ruler of Delhi and Ajmer before the establishment of Muslim rule in North India. Known for his bravery and military skills, he played a central role in resisting the Turkish invasions led by Muhammad of Ghur.

Early Life

  • Dynasty: Chahamana (Chauhan) dynasty.
  • Son of Someshvara; ascended the throne at a young age.
  • Capital: Ajmer, later Delhi.
  • Known for consolidating Rajput power in north-west India.

Political Achievements

  • Expanded territory to include parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, and Delhi.
  • Defended his kingdom against multiple invasions.
  • Maintained alliances with other Rajput states, though Rajput unity was often fragile.

Major Battles

First Battle of Tarain (1191 CE)

  • Opponent: Muhammad of Ghur.
  • Prithvirajโ€™s forces defeated the Ghurid army.
  • Ghur was captured but later released โ€” considered a strategic mistake.

Second Battle of Tarain (1192 CE)

  • Muhammad of Ghur returned with a stronger army.
  • Rajput forces were defeated due to:
    • Overconfidence after earlier victory.
    • Superior cavalry tactics of the Turks.
  • Prithviraj was captured and executed (or blinded, according to some accounts).

Reasons for Defeat in 1192

  1. Lack of unified command among Rajputs.
  2. Underestimation of Ghurid military strength.
  3. Failure to adapt to Turkish cavalry and archery tactics.

Cultural Contributions

  • Patron of literature โ€” supported poet Chand Bardai, who composed Prithviraj Raso (semi-historical epic).
  • Encouraged Sanskrit and regional language poetry.
  • Built and renovated forts and temples in Ajmer and Delhi.

Historical Significance

  • Symbol of Rajput resistance against Muslim invasions.
  • His defeat at Tarain marked the beginning of Muslim political dominance in North India.
  • Paved way for establishment of Delhi Sultanate by Qutbuddin Aibak.

Bihar Relevance

  • Direct rule did not extend to Bihar, but his fall allowed Turkish forces to expand eastward.
  • This indirectly led to Bakhtiyar Khiljiโ€™s invasion of Bihar and destruction of Nalanda.

Current Affairs (till Aug 2025)

  • ASI preservation projects at Ajmer and Delhiโ€™s Qila Rai Pithora.
  • Renewed academic debates on the historicity of Prithviraj Raso.
