Concept of Teaching
- Definition: Teaching is a purposeful, planned, and organized process in which a teacher transmits knowledge, experiences, and skills to learners. The ultimate aim is not just to provide information but to ensure the holistic development of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values.
- Purpose: Teaching is not merely instruction; it is a means of making the learning process active, meaningful, and effective.
Objectives of Teaching
- Knowledge Transmission: To provide facts, principles, and concepts to learners.
- Skill Development: To enhance intellectual, practical, and social skills.
- Thinking Ability: To promote analytical, logical, and critical thinking.
- Value Education: To inculcate moral, social, and cultural values.
- Personality Development: To build confidence, leadership, and social responsibility.
Levels of Teaching
- Memory Level of Teaching
- Introduction:
- Who introduced it? This level was first introduced by Johann Friedrich Herbart. Therefore, it is also called the Herbertian level of teaching.
- Concept: The memory level is the lowest level of teaching. Here, learners only memorize facts, definitions, rules, formulas, and information. It is based on rote learning with very little scope for understanding or application.
- Objectives:
- To provide learners with facts and information.
- To develop memory power.
- To create a foundation for higher levels of learning (Understanding and Reflective).
- Characteristics:
- It is teacher-centered.
- The learner remains passive.
- Emphasis is on repetition and drill.
- There is no scope for creativity or problem-solving.
- Role of Teacher: The teacher acts as an information provider. He/she delivers facts and definitions and ensures students memorize them through repetition.
- Role of Student: The student is a passive receiver. They only memorize the information and reproduce it later.
- Limitations:
- It is limited to rote memorization.
- It does not promote deep understanding.
- Higher-order thinking skills are not developed.
- Introduction:
- Understanding Level of Teaching
- Introduction: This level was mainly developed and elaborated by Morrison. It is a step above the Memory Level of teaching.
- Concept: At the understanding level, learners do not merely memorize facts; they interpret, compare, and understand cause-effect relationships. The aim is not just knowledge recall but to promote conceptual clarity and reasoning.
- Objectives:
- Promote conceptual clarity.
- Encourage reasoning and understanding.
- Prepare learners for higher levels of learning.
- Characteristics:
- Learner-centered, focuses on understanding.
- Teacher acts as an explainer.
- Learner participates actively.
- Encourages critical and logical thinking.
- Role of Teacher: The teacher acts as an explainer and clarifier. He/she explains concepts and develops learners’ reasoning abilities.
- Role of Student: The learner is an active participant. They understand information, interpret it, and can explain it to others.
- Areas of Use:
- Secondary and higher secondary education.
- Teaching concepts, theorems, cause-effect in history, scientific principles.
- Examples:
- Deriving proof of a theorem in mathematics.
- Explaining cause-effect relationships in history.
- Understanding scientific principles and performing experiments.
- Limitations:
- Time-consuming.
- Requires more teacher effort.
- Not suitable for simple memorization tasks.
- Reflective Level of Teaching
- Introduction: The Reflective Level was elaborated and developed by Morrison. It is the highest level above the Understanding Level.
- Concept: At this level, learners do not just memorize or understand; they analyze, synthesize, and evaluate. The aim is to promote problem-solving, creative thinking, and generation of new ideas.
- Characteristics:
- Learner-centered, focuses on higher-order thinking.
- Teacher acts as a facilitator/guide.
- Learner thinks independently and finds new solutions.
- Encourages research, innovation, and creativity.
- Objectives:
- Analyze and solve problems.
- Promote creative and critical thinking.
- Prepare learners for higher education and research.
- Role of Teacher: The teacher acts as a guide/facilitator. He/she helps learners think critically, solve problems, and develop new ideas.
- Role of Student: The learner is independent and active. They analyze problems, generate new solutions, and adopt a creative approach.
- Areas of Use:
- Higher education.
- Research and innovation.
- Advanced problem-solving.
- Examples:
- Finding solutions to new social or scientific problems.
- Conducting a research project.
- Developing new theories or models.
- Limitations:
- Time and effort-intensive.
